About Calmar curling club
History of Calmar Curling Club
The first single sheet curling rink in Calmar was built in the early 1930’s across the alley from the Theater Place Apartments and Hayduk Lumber. A second sheet of ice was added later but it still couldn't accommodate the number of enthusiastic curlers.
In 1954, a new 4 sheet complex was built where the current facility now stands. In the late 1970's, a new concrete floor was installed and the inside of the building was insulated and sheeted. In the late 1980's the club began an expansion of the curling rink front. The project, funded by lottery grants, Agricultural Society funds and with a large infusion of volunteer labour, more than doubled the size of the existing viewing and lounge area. The addition included a meeting room, a larger kitchen, a larger viewing area on the main floor and an expanded lounge and viewing area on the second floor. The expansion was almost complete when an electrical malfunction began a fire which quickly engulfed the building on Saturday, November 26th, 1988. Fortunately, it was rebuilt and the grand opening of the complex was in the summer of 1990.
Many events have been held in our facility over the years but thanks to the generous community and donations, it will be around for many years to come.
